The green imperative by Viktor Papanek

Whether it's horror at the plastic littering the world's beaches or despair at the melting of the ice caps, the world is gradually waking up to the impending climate disaster. In The Green Imperative, Papanek advocates for design that addresses these issues head-on. This means using materials that can be recycled and reused, doing away with useless packaging, thinking about how products make us feel and how they engage all our senses, putting nature at the center of design, working on a smaller scale, rejecting aesthetics for its own sake, and thinking before we buy. First published at the end of the 20th century, the book offered a plethora of honest advice, clear examples, and scathing criticism, exposing the flaws and opportunities in the design world at the time. A quarter of a century later, Papanek's lucid prose has lost none of its verve, and the problems he raises have become even more urgent, offering today's readers a fascinating historical perspective on the issues at hand and a model for their possible solutions. With 141 illustrations, 26 of them in color.
